Willy Chavarria and adidas Originals Drop a Sneaker-Sandal Hybrid
info@hypebae.com (Hypebae) Tue, 05 Aug 2025 HypebaeThis weekend, adidas Originals hosted a panel at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, where Willy Chavarria unveiled the latest silhouette of his collaboration with the brand, the Chavarria Oaxaca Slip On.
Chavarria shared that the shoe is inspired by the huarache, a classic Mexican sandal worn across generations and now a staple of Chicano street style. This modern reimagining includes an exaggerated grip sole and premium leather-woven upper in a slip-on, open-toe design. The result is a unique sneaker-sandal hybrid. Whether you rock the socks and sandals look or prefer a toes-out summer (as we've been seeing with the flip-flop phenomenon), the rules don't apply with this shoe. The campaign, shot by photographer Marco Ovando, sees the shoe styled with white socks and modelled by Mexican artist Juan Berthau, but we can equally see it with a midi-skirt and bare toes.
The panel delved into the importance of legacy in innovation and how an understanding of the past can lead to more authentic collaborations. Chavarria, known to advocate for social justice, include a reference to his American-Mexican heritage in this latest release. Speakers included Archival Specialist Sandra Trapp, Originals Design Director Rafael Mayorga and Director of Storytelling Valentina Benitez Castellanos. It also celebrated the continued partnership with Bad Bunny and presented the adidas Originals para Bad Bunny archive, which has been garnering huge online attention.
No details have been shared yet regarding the exact release date of the shoe, with Chavarria captioning an Instagram post of the shoe, "Soon." We will be keeping a close eye out on both the adidas and Willy Chavarria websites.
