Nadia Lee Cohen and Martine Syms Join "It Smells Like Girl" Art Show
info@hypebae.com (Hypebae) Wed, 30 Jul 2025 HypebaeJeffrey Deitch and Company Gallery announce a new art exhibition, the "It Smells Like Girl."
Opening September 6, the joint show explores the stigma of female hysteria through several mediums. Hysteria was essentially history's way of saying a woman was "too much." Too emotional? Perfect candidate. However, it was later debunked as a medical diagnosis and acknowledged for sexism. As the press release writes, "hysteria was less a pathology than a social mirror reflecting the anxieties, fears and fantasies projected onto women's bodies."
This show explores the weaponization of women's experiences through several mediums from painting, video and sculpture to performances, screenings and installations. "Across mediums, the artists channel a sensorial vocabulary of refusal, one that resists clarity in favor of sensation, mood and unease. Rather than pathologizing emotional excess, the exhibition proposes hysteria as a radical strategy that exposes the fractures beneath the surface."
"It Smells Like Girl" will feature fashion photographer Nadia Lee Cohen, Martine Syms, Juliana Huxtable and many more. "It is both an homage and a provocation; a call to witness, to question, and perhaps, to unravel."
View the exhibit from September 6 to November 1, 2025.
