Gen Z this, Gen Z that, the generation that everyone keeps trying to pin down. Whether that's shopping habits, education levels, employability or sexual desire, they're the first cohort to come of age in the digital world, giving us endless data on their habits. But, dealing with increasing climate stress, political upheaval and new levels of isolation, who are the individuals behind the numbers?
A new exhibition at the Photo Elysée in Switzerland is giving Gen Z a way to show themselves on their own terms. Titled Gen Z: Shaping a New Gaze, this intimate showcase spotlights 66 artists who explore what it means to live in a world in constant flux. Spanning a myriad of storytelling media, the exhibition traces the sentiments that sculpt the generation's worldview. Outdated social norms are challenged with new ones, while body and gender are explored alongside the concepts of coexisting identities. In a world driven by the algorithm, art adds an authenticity to insights that data could never capture.
The works reflect an urgent need for representation and a desire to tell stories. The showcase sees a rich tapestry of experiences, cultures and perspectives, with the personal becoming political. This is an intimate glimpse into a generation who, in the words of the institution, are "questioning the world around them while striving to define their place within it."
The exhibition is currently on view at the Photo Elysée until February 1, 2026. Head to the website for more information.
