Chanel Takes Its Métiers d’art Collection to the New York City Subway

Matthieu Blazy just presented Chanel's 2026 Métiers d'art collection in New York, his first for the brand. Showcasing the latest "demi-couture" collection, somewhere between haute couture and ready-to-wear, it marks a pivotal moment not only for the brand but for Blazy too.

Previously held in locations like Manchester, Shanghai, Dubai and Salzburg, the shows initially began in the House's Paris salons, but have toured the world since the era of Lagerfeld, a tradition carried on by Virginie Vard and now by Blazy.

Speaking about his inspiration for this year's collection, the designer shared, "The New York subway belongs to all. Everyone uses it: there are students and gamechangers; statesmen and teenagers. It is a place full of enigmatic yet wonderful encounters, a clash of pop archetypes, where everyone has somewhere to go and each is unique in what they wear. Like in the movies, they are the heroes of their own stories."

Building on Blazy's debut for the House, first showcased during Paris Fashion Week this year, the designer's sophomore collection explores themes of drama, joy and personality, looking at the different characters of the subway, from socialites to students. Taking attendees on a journey from the 1920s to now, the collection leans into Art Deco influences, characterized by feathers, heavy embroidery and jewel tones, interspersed with contemporary graphics, silhouettes and fabrics.

Blurring the lines between Paris and New York, the collection offers everything from "playful and chic" to "pragmatic and eccentric." Debuting what the brand describes as "the new school flapper," the collection blends Chanel signatures like tweeds and chains with lumberjack flannel, retro fringing and animal-inspired accessories.
