Here's Why Gel Polish Was Just Banned in Europe
info@hypebae.com (Hypebae) Tue, 02 Sep 2025 HypebaeThe European Union officially banned an ingredient found in gel nail polish. TPO, a common ingredient in the product, has been deemed unsafe by European officials for posing health risks such as cancer and reproductive harm. On the other hand, the U.S. is yet to regulate gel polish.
Starting September 1, the sale and use of TPO is officially prohibited by the EU. For nail fans, this means that a large number of gel polishes will no longer be on shelves at retailers, or available in nail salons. While some gel polish formulas don't include the ingredient, the EU is demanding salons get rid of their remaining stock of gel polish containing TPO and immediately begin using compliant products instead.

Recently, a growing number of beauty fans on TikTok have started discussing their personal experiences with gel polish allergies. With the popularity of gel polish on the rise, its harmful effects have also become a hot topic of discussion. As a result, the platform is divided over the EU ban — with some relieved at the return to normal polish, and others desperate for gel polish alternatives.
