A colorful hair clip, a messy bedroom, a communion dress, girlhood can be instantly recognized through fleeting stills in time. Often dismissed throughout art history and framed as silent, naive and daughter of, the young girl as the muse now takes on a new form. In this latest exhibition at MoMu in Antwerp, girlhood is presented as more than just a theme, but a way of seeing, of remembering and imagining.

Titled Girls. On Boredom, Rebellion and Being In-Between, the showcase brings together photography, visual art, fashion and film in an exhibition of female adolescence, exploring the complexity and nostalgia of this moment in time. Featuring the objects and scenes that can instantly take us back to poignant moments, the topic offers an emotional, psychological and political depth.

Featuring works by Sofia Coppola, Juergen Teller and Simone RochaGirls explores the way in which girlhood is remembered and represented through different media. Questions of femininity, the infantilization of women and girlhood's impact on visual culture are all prompted, showing the visitor a powerful yet tender portrait. The exhibition was created in-conversation with teenagers of today, giving it a sense of reality without sugar-coating. The future depends on how we support teenagers, and Girls is a reminder of the importance of visibility.

The exhibition is now on view until February 1, 2026, at MoMu Fashion Museum in Antwerp.
