Barbie Can Be Anyone, Even Anna Sui
info@hypebae.com (Hypebae) Fri, 02 May 2025 HypebaeJust when you thought Barbie fever had cooled down, fashion's favorite goth-glam queen Anna Sui has entered the plastic pantheon. As part of AAPI Heritage Month, Mattel is honoring Sui with a "Barbie Inspiring Women" doll that reflects her unmistakable style and lasting impact on fashion.
The doll captures the designer's signature look with impressive accuracy -- from the dark eyeliner and red lips to her layered outfit and statement accessories. For Sui, this collaboration brings things full circle. Some of her earliest designs were made for Barbie, back when she saw the doll as a symbol of ambition. Now, she's part of the very story that inspired her.
"I've been a Barbie fan since childhood, and dressing Barbie played a pivotal role in igniting my passion for fashion. I spent countless hours designing looks for my dolls with fabric scraps leftover from my mom's sewing projects -- it was a creative outlet that encouraged me to follow my dreams," Sui shares in the press release.
Details like jewelry drawn from her own wardrobe, sunglasses, dresses and boots referencing her Spring 2007 collection and green nail polish from her beauty line, add authenticity to the tribute -- a small-scale reflection of a designer who shaped a generation of style.
