Louis Vuitton is opening a new exhibition in Paris exploring its influence on the Art Deco movement. Staged on the 100th anniversary of the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, which took place in Paris in 1925, the immersive presentation looks at the defining moments of the movement and the fashion House's influence.
Since its founding in 1854, Louis Vuitton has accompanied generations of travellers with its trunks and accessories that are known globally for their quality and style. The exhibition shows the influence of Gaston-Louis Vuitton, grandson of the founder, on the atelier through sharing his appreciation for decorative objects. Integrating his artistic tastes into the aesthetics of the House, collaborations formed between the brand and artists like Pierre-Émile Legrain and Camille Cless-Brothier. These partnerships resulted in Louis Vuitton's celebrated presentation at the 1925 exhibition.
Featuring over 300 objects, the exhibition will include a number of never-before-seen pieces. The showcase spreads across eight rooms, each with its own theme. Beginning with the heritage of the House, the exhibition then transitions to a reconstruction of the brand's original stand at the Paris Expo. The third room shows the technical expertise and design language that defined the designs at the time, including the auto trunk and geometric evening bags.
In subsequent rooms, you'll find Louis Vuitton's first beauty and grooming kits, the House's window displays and archival 1920s designs presented alongside the contemporary counterparts, including from Nicolas Ghesquière's 2020 Cruise collection that was inspired by New York's Art Deco architecture. Looks from Pharrell Williams, Marc Jacobs and Kim Jones also make an appearance and echo the jazz era vibe.
The exhibition opens on September 26 at 26 Quai de la Mégisserie in Paris.
