The iconic Museum of Sex announces the launch of the "RADICAL PERVERTS" exhibition.

Opening to the public on October 13, "RADICAL PERVERTS: Ecstasy and Activism in Queer Public Space, 1975-2000," is a documentation of sex culture and queer safe spaces, during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. During this 25-year span, the queer community reveled in its own secret soon to be highlighted at the Museum of Sex.

Living in a sexual revolution, following the 1960s onset of the sex-positive movement, queer people were able to frequent "BDSM bars, bath houses, porn theaters, parks and tearooms" as "highly-charged sites of sexual freedom," the museum shared. Not only were these safe spaces ideal for pleasure and play, but also hosted important community work such as the "grounds for early organizing, safer sex education and public action around HIV/AIDS. Curated by Alexis Heller, "RADICAL PERVERTS" showcases contemporary works and archival ephemera. Featuring works by the likes of Viva Ruiz, Phyllis Christopher, Tom Burr, The Pussy Palace Oral History Project, José Luis Cortés, Nayland Blake and archives from the Leather Archives & Museum, the exhibit documents the quintessential importance of protest and pleasure.

"Protest and political action are inextricable from even the kinkiest LGBTQ venues," Heller stated in the exclusive press release. "To promote each other’s survival with unabashed pleasure and joy, in defiance of discrimination and grief, is radical. And that heroic spirit is what inspires me and mine to pay reverence to these histories and archives again and
again."

Explore the exhibit from October 12 to April 14 and visit the Museum of Sex website for more details.
