The FDA Just Gave Us a Major Warning About Mousse Sunscreen

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, mousse sunscreen like Vacation's Classic Whip SPF 50 and Supergoop!'s PLAY Body Mousse SPF 50 have not been cleared as effective forms of sun protection. As a result, both brands have been issued a warning letter. "Beware of sunscreen products in mousse form because they might not be effective," the FDA says in an X post.

While the FDA determines that oil, lotion, cream, gel, butter, paste, ointment, stick, spray and powder products are exempt from filing an application in order to be marketed as sunscreen — mousse SPF isn't included and must be granted permission by the FDA. The administration reports that both Vacation and Supergoop! are in violation of this rule, and have been given 15 days to address the violations.
