New York City's Hannah Traore Gallery announces the "Who? Me?" group exhibition.

Curated by founder Hannah Traore, the mixed-medium exhibit explores the importance of defining oneself, for themselves. The exclusive press release stated, "Who? Me?" honors the imperative to write one's own myth and memory for those who choose to remain irreducible in the face of cultural erasure and imposed representation. For several of the exhibiting artists, self-portraiture was a first site of art-making and their bodies their first available canvas for creation."

Key names presenting in the exhibit are Kesewa Aboah, Turiya Adkins, Bre Andy, Yagazie Emezi, Arlina Cai, Renee Cox, Camila Falquez, Alanna Fields, Luzene Hill, Misha Japanwala, OLUSEYE and Anya Paintsil. As the press release continued, "A majority of the works were produced specifically for this exhibition, and will be presented here for the first time." The exhibit will also feature the grandfather of West African self-portraiture, Samuel Fosso's self-portraiture.

Reknowned female artists Aboah and Japanwala both began their respective careers with introspective work done through self-portraiture. This exhibition marks their return to the medium and aims to capture the current phase of their evolution. For those unfamiliar, Japanwala has led many notable cultural moments such as Lupita N'yongo's custom breastplate worn to the 2023 Tony Awards. Aboah, on the other hand, has showcased identity in several forms from her artwork to fashion campaigns.

Visit the opening reception on May 29, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
