It's been a heated week for Sydney Sweeney. After her new movie Christy experienced a historically bad box office opening and harsh reviews, Ruby Rose hit out in a seemingly unprompted social media rant that branded Sweeney a "cretin."
Directed by David Michôd, the film follows the real life of female boxing star Christy Martin, as she competed in the ring from 1989 to 2012 and held the WBC female super welterweight title in 2009. The film experienced one of the biggest flops in recent history on its opening weekend, prompting Sweeney to defend the movie. The actor took to Instagram to share, "If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded" she wrote. "So yes I'm proud. Why? Because we don't always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact."
Seemingly in response to this, Orange Is The New Black star Rose took to Threads to share her thoughts, and that she was initially in talks to star in the movie. "The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry" she wrote. "Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It's part of why I stayed in acting." Rose is a prominent figure in the LGBTQ+ community and accused Sweeney of not being connected to this aspect of the character, with her alleged ties to the Republican party. "For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the 'people.' None of 'the people' want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You're a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better."
Recently Sweeney also came under fire for her appearance in an advert for American Eagle Jeans, which was accused of promoting eugenics by social media users. When given the chance to respond in an interview the actor avoided any comment.
